Yeah, I'm not a marketing translator at all, stick to my dry old legal stuff mostly, but there may well be a standard term that covers it other than "freeloading". Good luck

Thanks for your prompt reply! I felt that in this context, 'meeliften' meant profiting at the expense of another, such as cashing in on something. However, I don't find cashing in very elegant and wonder if any of my fellow translators can come up with something more eloquent!

Explanation: Just some ideas to help get the ball rolling - although freeloading is informal, it seems to have some support as an accepted term in marketing.
Here is another extract that confirms it is something like "cashing in" + "sponging off"

\"Profiteering\" can\'t be used - think it inevitably springs to mind but that refers to overcharging and taking advantage of a situation rather than freeloading/sponging off others.
