Dutch term or phrase: uiterste termen
"Uiterste termen wisselen"

From a table of contents, under a heading "EIGENSCHAPPEN EVENREDIGHEDEN", which I have translated tentatively as "Characteristics of propotionalities".

Who knows what is menat in mathematical English?

outer terms
Explanation:
1. Hoofdeigenschap & afgeleide eigenschappen

So this means in an equation 3/4 = 6/8, you can multiply the outer terms 3x8 = 24 and the inner terms 4x6 = 24 and you will get the same result.

I'll use an example, because I'm bad with words ^_^
If a/b=c/d then a and d are on the outside, and therefore are the outer terms of your proportion.

Looks like you can switch the outer terms, so you get 8/4 = 6/3 = 2.
And you can switch the inner terms, so you get 3/6 = 4/8 = 1/2.

Now who says math can't be cool??? :-D

agree  Ken Cox: These should probably be called 'proportionality expressions', and the rule regarding the outer terms only holds true if fractional notation is used (e.g. y = kx is a proportionality expression, with fractional notation y/k = x/1, y/x = k/1, etc.
