Ik denk dat 'spannen' betrekking heeft op het opspannen van een werkstuk in een draaibank of boormachine, en dat met 'toegift' het stuk van het uitgangsmateriaal wordt bedoeld dat uiteindelijk niet wordt bewerkt maar slechts dient om het gehele werkstuk in de draaibank of boormachine vast te houden, d.w.z. het ruwe, niet voor bewerking bestemde uiteinde dat later van de rest van het werkstuk wordt gescheiden. Of voor dat laatste een vaste term in het Engels bestaat weet ik, maar 'rough end' lijkt me bruikbaar.

Het woord 'toegift' komt ook voor in de context van het extra stukje van een zoom ('zoomtoegift') bij deltavliegers. Zie bijvoorbeeld:

Explanation:
In this context 'spannen' is 'machine using a chip-cutting tool' (typicaly turning in a lathe) and 'toegift' apparently means 'tolerance allowance'.
The usage seems to be rare in Dutch. Perhaps the text was (mis)translated from German or written by someone more familiar with German ('Zugabe' can mean 'tolerance allowance' in German).
Note that the term entered should be corrected to 'toegift' for the glossary entry.

Jack is right, and I\'m wrong. \'Spannen\' clearly means \'clamp\', and the problem with \'toegift\' is to decide what sort of allowance is meant.
