| | devilling machines | Explanation: Kluwers Universeel Technisch Woordenboek defines wolf as devilling machine. A devilling machine is a machine which has sharp teeth and is usually used for tearing rags or cloth. Kate Hudson has already given a couple of references. The point of the extract of the asker is that it is a list of machines which are dangerous in the workplace. Therefore to translate duivels as dowels is clearly wrong. (In any event dowels are not called duivels but there are a range of other words for them). The passage is clearly referrring to the dangerous devilling machines which have sharp teeth which could hurt an operator. |
