Dutch to English translations [PRO] Medical - Medical: Health Care
Dutch term or phrase:bejaardenverzorger
This should be really simple but I'm struggling - can anyone help with the US term for this - I've thought of geriatric carer, geriatric helper, carer for the elderly but none of these are particularly common or seem to be commonly used in the US.
A geriatric aide cares for older people who require help with personal care. The word geriatric refers to the aged and the aging process. The elderly people needing geriatric aide care may live in a private home or nursing home or be a part of an adult daycare center program or hospital. They may have illnesses or just need help due to a lack of strength or a lack of resources. Geriatric aides mainly assist with personal care such as feeding, grooming, toileting, bathing and dressing, but they may do some cleaning tasks as well.
For example, a geriatric aide who provides personal assistance in an older person's home may also provide light housekeeping such as preparing meals and doing laundry. Geriatric in-home care aides may also administer medications or check blood pressure, converse with patients and help them attend social events. In community care settings, geriatric aides may be called geriatric nursing assistants as they usually report to nurses. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-does-a-geriatric-aide-do.htm
Many geriatric aide positions have no educational requirements, although high school diplomas are often preferred. On-the-job training is usually provided. Many colleges now offer two- or four-year degrees in gerontology. Courses in first-aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), biology, psychology, health care, and sociology are useful. http://careers.stateuniversity.com/pages/686/Geriatric-Aide....
The context: someone is suffering from a pulmonary disorder and consequently "Mijn werk als bejaardenverzorgster kon ik niet meer uitvoeren." This is all of the relevant context - so no indication as to whether this person is trained or not.
To Vixen + Erik: a google entry I found said that a bejaardenverzorger would be trained, hence my comment to Erik below. Vixen, I note your helpful reference though which contradicts what I had found and certainly has more credence.

Asker: Thanks for the quick response. I suppose I wasn't clear whether 'bejaardenverzorger' was actually a trained nurse, or what we call a 'carer', who may or may not have received nursing training. It seems that he/she IS trained, so this would fit.

Asker: Thanks too Vixen. 'Aide' is the word I was looking for when thinking of carer. I just need to decide whether nurse or 'aide' works best in my context. Thanks for responding so quicly.
