Dutch to English translations [PRO] Medical - Medical (general) | | Dutch term or phrase: fladderthorax | In a legal text about a personal injury case there are some medical terms. One of them is 'fladderthorax'.
I have found a definition in Dutch, but I need an English equivalent. According to 'Coelho Zakwoordenboek der Geneeskunde' 'fladderthorax' is:
naar binnen bewegen van een deel van de thoraxwand bij inademing en naar buiten bij uitademing bij multiple ribfracturen, dit is tegengesteld aan de normale bewegingen. |
| | | flail chest | Explanation: I'm no medical expert, but it sounds like it could be 'flail chest'.
"Flail chest describes a situation in which a portion of the rib cage is separated from the rest of the chest wall, usually due to a severe blunt trauma, such as a serious fall or a car accident. This affected portion is unable to contribute to expansion of the lungs, which creates some obvious problems for the patient (hampered breathing) and can contribute to some not-so-obvious ones. Flail chest is a serious condition that can lead to long-term disability and even death."

Another reference:
"Flail chest is traditionally described as the paradoxical movement of a segment of chest wall caused by fractures of 3 or more ribs anteriorly and posteriorly within each rib."
"Flail chest is a clinical anatomic diagnosis noted in blunt trauma patients with paradoxical or reverse motion of a chest wall segment while spontaneously breathing."
