Medical - Medical (general)
Dutch term or phrase: intoxicatie
Have a database which uses both 'intoxicatie' and 'vergiftiging' as synonyms. Say 'intoxication' to the layman and they'll think of drunkenness. But is it the preferable term to 'poisoning' in medical science? I want to use one term for this doc; so should it be 'intoxication' or 'poisoning'?
Sample words:
'vergiftigingsgeval'
'intoxicatie met een product'

Still not sure which is the best answer for my context. The agency medical 'specialist' will decide on it. So the answer with the most agrees wins, for now.

Asker: Thank you. The poisons in this case are not only drugs and alcohol, but any substance, product, compound, etc. that can cause poisoning/intoxication symptoms. Is it still 'intoxication' then?

agree  Kate Hudson: intoxication and poisoning are not necessarily the same - being drunk is being in a state of intoxication - alcohol poisoning can be life threatening

drug toxicity

Explanation:
Intoxication is an acceptable terminology to use in medical texts. However, as Dr. Lofthouse points out, it all depends on the context.

If suitable for your context I would use:
'vergiftigingsgeval'- toxicity
'intoxicatie met een product' - substance toxicity

Poisoning past bij alle (passieve) gevallen van intoxicatie, terwijl intoxication meestal intentie impliceert, dan behalve bij een toxisch virus.

You could say that poisoning is "the event" and intoxication is the "physical state of being poisoned."

As Kate said (I am so free, at my own discretion and without her permission, to use her words in this context): "being drunk is being in a state of intoxication - alcohol poisoning can be life threatening"

Poisoning in medical context:
WHO | Management of Poisoning: A handbook for health care workers
Accidental poisoning. Self-poisoning. Using poison to harm other people. Poison in food or drink. Medical poisoning. Abuse of drugs, chemicals or plants ...

Intoxicatin in medical context:

Notes to answerer
Asker: Like I said, I am leaning towards poisoning, but the OED does state quite clearly of intoxication: "1.1 The action of poisoning; administration of poison; killing by poison; the state of being poisoned; an instance of this. Obs. exc. Med."

Asker: But I'm less interested in dictionary definitions than in what the doctors and scientists use on the work floor :-).
