Dutch term or phrase: (extracerebrale) beplakking
From a report of a patient suffering apparent panic attacks during the night and undergoing tests to determine whether epilepsy was the cause. I'm not sure whether "extra cerebrale" in the quote below should actually be "extracerebrale", as there is rather a difference in meaning between the two! Anyway, the problem term here is "beplakking" - what is actually being done, either extracerebrally or cerebrally to a greater extent?

"In eerste instantie gingen in de epilepsiekliniek de gedachten vooral uit naar een slaapstoornis en werd ambulant polysomnografisch onderzoek verricht met extra cerebrale *beplakking* om ook eventuele epilepsie te kunnen beoordelen."

electrodes pasted (extracerebrally)
Explanation:
with electrodes pasted extracerebrally

beplakking met elektroden

In conventional scalp EEG, the recording is obtained by placing electrodes on the scalp with a *conductive gel or paste*, usually after preparing the scalp area by light abrasion to reduce impedance due to dead skin cells. Many systems typically use electrodes, each of which is attached to an individual wire. Some systems use caps or nets into which electrodes are embedded; this is particularly common when high-density arrays of electrodes are needed

EEG studies are carried out by pasting electrodes on the surface of the scalp to measure the electrical activity of brain. This procedure, like any ...

"electrodes pasted (extracerebrally) is of course a literal translation, while you may need something like:

with an extracerebral set of electrodes

possibly the adjective extracerebral is used to differentiate between extracerebral and intracerebral investigations

Thanks both. "With additional electrodes" will do nicely (I can't edit the "answer" option here, unfortunately). Sorry about the "extra" wild goose chase!

agree  Anne Schulz: agree with "electrodes", but the "extra cerebral" is "additional cerebral electrodes" (these are not necessarily- or only a few- included in a standard polysomnography, and are required in this patient to capture any epileptic activity during sleep)

-> Thank you, Anna. This explains it all!! They place extra electrodes because they want to find out about the epilepsy. It struck me as odd, this "extracerebral"
