Still on the subject of African music, I'd like some advice on the proper musical phrasing of one sentence in particular. The text concerns the "nwomkoro", once a purely vocal genre, now accompanied by various instruments (drums, rattles, bells). Phrases I'm stumbling over are "de groove is ternair samengesteld" and "samengestelde binaire maat" (posted separately).

De voorzanger begint met het reciteren van de liedtekst, gevolgd door de dubbele en de enkele bel die een ostinaat cross rhythm spelen. Daarna vallen de verschillende trommels in en wordt er een vaste cadans gespeeld. De groove, gespeeld door de atoke [= single bell] en de dawuro [= double bell], is ternair samengesteld maar naargelang het verloop van het nummer verandert het in een samengestelde binaire maat.

Explanation:
Helemaal goed, lijkt mij. Ik zou groove niet vertalen. Dat hoeft nl. niet per se betrekking te hebben op het ritme, maar kan volgens mij ook zoiets betekenen als de muzikale basis van het stuk. 'Compound triple time' betekent een driedelige, samengestelde maatsoort zoals 7/4 met bijvoorbeeld drie ongelijke groepen van 3 + 2 + 2. Duple time is ook correct!
