Music
Dutch term or phrase: verdeelde
Text describing various African musical instruments.

De dawuru-bel speelt een ostinatofiguur die bestaat uit een ternair *verdeelde* thesis en een binair *verdeelde* arsis. Dit ritmische patroon wordt constant aangehouden met weinig variaties.

Can ‘verdeelde’ be (sensibly) rendered as ‘meter’ here? i.e. a triple meter strong beat and a duple meter weak beat

English translation:consists of a compound thesis (subdivided into 3 parts) and a simple arsis (subdivided into 2 parts)
Explanation:
This concerns an asymmetric meter with a a thesis/accented beat/downbeat subdivided into 3 parts and an arsis/unaccented beat/upbeat subdivided into 2 parts (something like 3+2/8, except that it's an ostinato).

compound beat division of the beat into 3 equal parts
simple beat division of the beat into 2 equal parts

sorry, it's not an asymmetric meter but an asymmetric rhythmic pattern

Saitch, I'm afraid this has nothing to do with triplets and 8th notes but with beats divided into sub-beats. In Western notation, these could be represented by quarter notes subdivided into 8th-note triplets and two 8ths, or by half notes divided into quarter-note triplets and two quarters, or by 16th notes subdivided into.... You can't assume the music is in 4/4 as this time signature is not even used in African music, which is typically polymetric/asymmetric. In any case, the easiest and shortest and most musically accurate way to express this is by using the words 'compound' and 'simple', or 'beats subdivided into 2/3 parts'.

a phrase (thesis) in triplets followed by a phrase (arsis) using straight eighth notes

Explanation:
dadada dadada (...) [then] dada dada (...)

this isn't the Philharmoniker playing
under a different moniker

binary (binair) points at eighth (not quarter) notes
as only these show up in pairs [in a (assumed) 4/4]

agree  Jack den Haan: Certainly not 'meter'. That refers to the whole measure.
