Dutch to English translations [PRO] Other / raport over klimaatbuffers | | Dutch term or phrase: stuifdijk | Weet iemand een mooie vertaling voor stuifdijk?
Driftbank? Artificial dunes? |
| | | drift dike/dune dike | Explanation: http://www.waddenzeesites.nl/asp/getecomare.asp?hrec=4598456...
The drift dike lies along a large part of the beach. This is a straight dune dike several kilometers long. This dune dike used to be even longer, but the sea has struck several holes during storms. In fact, the island threatened to break in half. However, scientist say that will never happen. The dune dike was meant to protect the island from storms, but it is no longer necessary since the construction of other dikes and dunes.
There are other non-Dutch sites that use that term usually as 'dune dijk' which is what it actually is. The name drift dike is appropriate in that it will drift with the wind direction as a natural dune also does.
