Hello everyone,
I'm currently translating a manual for an irrigation system which measures a crop's weight to determine when to start an irrigation cycle. There is one term, however, which I'm having trouble finding the right equivalent for: 'afvlakfactor'. The term is explained below.

De afvlakfactor is de mate waarin het gemeten gewicht van de weegschaal iedere minuut wordtafgevlakt. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in het aantal procenten dat het oudeafgevlakte gewicht van invloed is op de berekening van het nieuwe afgevlaktegewicht. Hiermee voorkom je dat als er iemand langs de weegschaal loopt (of een kat ofeen kikker) dat de weegschaal schommelt en ineens een veel hoger en daarnalager gewicht aangeeft. Bij een te laag gewicht start er een gietbeurt.

Explanation:
On first sight the term 'smoothing factor' seems appealing as this is a known mathematical term. But I think what is meant here is an averaging factor where the average is being used to determine whether irrigation should begin

Asker: The full sentence, or rather the bulletpoint, reads 'Een afvlakfactor voor een weegschaalstart'. I guess 'damping factor' can be used in this context.

Asker: Thanks very much, Dave. Although I believe what is meant by a 'weegschaalstart' is the activation of an irrigation cycle based on data from the scales (i.e. the weight measured has dropped below a certain point, indicating the growing medium has become too dry). I must admit, the concise Dutch phrasing is a bit confusing.
