Dutch term or phrase:gefiseleerd
This term comes from a (Dutch) text on assertiveness training where various situations are described and the participants must enact role-plays. The entire situation reads as follows:
'Je zit in een gezelschap te luisteren naar een verhaal van iemand. Je kunt duidelijk horen dat hij gestudeerd heeft, want hij gebruikt allerlei moeilijke woorden. Je hebt moeite om hem te begrijpen. De vriendelijke heer zit stevig op zijn praatstoel en je voelt zichzelf steeds dommer worden want iedereen zit erbij alsof ze het volledig begrijpen. "Ja" zegt de man "De gedachten occulteren is een genre dat vooral in Amerika wordt gefiseleerd". Je zegt:……….'
Any suggestions on how to translate this sentence, and particularly the word 'gefiseleerd', would be much appreciated: "De gedachten occulteren is een genre dat vooral in Amerika wordt gefiseleerd."
Unfortunately, there is no more context or explanation. I think the sentence itself is supposed to represent a bit of 'intellectual mumbo-jumbo'!
The client confirms that this word does not exist (and is not a typo) and may be replaced with an English word which also does not mean anything but which suitably impresses the listener. So I think I'll just have to invent a word..! Thanks for all your suggestions and inputs.

Occulter bestaat ook in het Frans. Ficher ook wel en qua uitspraak zou fiseleren wel logisch zijn, maar lijkt me inderdaad uitsluitend iets voor mensen die graag exclusieve (niet-bestaande) woorden gebuiken. Overigens hebben Frans note en noter volgens mij beslist wel een gemeenschappelijk element, maar of ze "van elkaar zijn afgeleid" via verbalisering (zoals volgens de dikke vandalen in NL spatie -> spatiëren) of substantivering, weet ik niet.
Vele werkwoorden met -eren komen rechtstreeks van het Frans. 'Noter' bijvoorbeeld. Daaraan heeft men opnieuw een werkwoordsuitgang geplakt (en) om het een werkwoord in het Nederlands te maken. Heeft niks te maken met het woord 'nota' of 'noot'. Het woord schijnt ook voor te komen in het Utrechtsch Dagblad van 1946 waar het gebruikt wordt ivm met kunst, waar het ook zoiets als 'ciseleren' lijkt te betekenen.
Ik denk dat men hier gemakkelijk zelfstandige naamwoorden met behulp van ngefixte vloeiklanken (le en r) omtovert tot werkwoorden. Hier heeft men volgens mij fiche geverbaliseerd tot fiseleren en dat betekent dan documenteren, beschrijven, noteren, boekstaven, registreren, archiveren enzovoort. Mijn eerste indruk
That could be yes. However the word must still be understandable as something that is wrongly made up, i.e. taken from the French for example in this case, like he does with 'occulteren'. If the word is not a typo, then what does it mean? If the person talking here wants to come across as 'intellectual', he is not going to use a word which he has made up and isn't understandable, even in context. Hence, my thought that it is a typo.
Thanks...I'm also starting to think that one option is to translate this 'creatively' into something equally nonsensical in English. Or revert to the client!
Is this example not meant to say that the man who uses the fancy language goes so far as to 'make up' words, or at its best confuses them with existing words? If that makes sense, you would need an English word that doesn't mean anything either. There might be more information on this in the following text, or you might just have to contact the client.

Explanation: Definitely pretentious. 'Fiseleren' does not exist. I think it is 'ciseleren' (c is under the f on the keyboard). 'Ciseleren' means 'to chisel', but also, figuratively, to work finely or something of the sort, like a silversmith. It is that profession that delivered the term together with cookery.

That could also be a typo, indeed, but normally fusilleren is written with two ls, as you have seen. At any rate, I have never come across any real figurative meaning of 'fusilleren' in that respect... Unless, the person is supposed to be speaking dialect and his words are badly written to mimick his speech. That said, though, that is not common in Dutch, at least not in training manuals I wouldn't think. I think 'ciseleren' suits the context better, both of admiration of America culture and desperate snobbery.
