It appears from the context that they actually hired both a moderator and a manager. Person 1 could be called the moderator, with a more content-oriented role, and person 2 the manager ,with a more process-oriented role. All in all I would stick with the term used in the source text..

Both very good points, but I think I might ask my client nonetheless. I think it is part of my job as a translator to draw attention to any differences in perception of terms by the target audience if there is any doubt as to whether a term might be ill-chosen. Perhaps they have in fact chosen the term "kennismoderator" deliberately, and wish to translate this as "knowledge moderator" in their English language communication. However, just in case, and because during my research I could not find any references to back up the term in question, I think it might be better to simply ask them about it.

What about the KudoZ moderators? There are only a few dozen of them in the world, but that doesn't make their job title wrong :-)

I don't think it's your job, as a translator, to say 'Sorry, you've carefully chosen this word because it describes the job, but very few other people in the world have "knowledge moderator" as their job title, so I'm not going to allow you to use this term."

There are probably not many Michael J.W. Beijers in the world, but no one is going to force you to change your name. :-)

But I think it does say something if you cannot find anything in the way of meaningful Google hits / reliable online references to support your term. For example, in reference to the term "Knowledge Moderator", I can find NOTHING that would convince me that this is actually a position that exists in the English-speaking world, or anywhere for that matter.

1.** One hit is the "Knowledge Moderotor at Shell" [linkedin of Karin Hartog-Kroeze; Science Teacher at Antwerp British School: http://www.linkedin.com/in/karinhartogkroeze] mentioned by Writeaway, which when you change to, "Knowledge MANAGER at Shell", gives many more convincing results.

2.** Another is a paper about "knowledge moderation" in relation to "the Growth of China's Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research." [http://www.spp.gatech.edu/faculty/WOPRpapers/Tang.WOPR.pdf], which is not about the job of a person in a large organisation.

3.** And one last hit, from here: ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/paxis/docs/application_form_v...
I never really trust Cordis' English anyway, and the term is lacking any context).

Can someone point me in the direction of a job description of a "Knowledge Moderator"???

Kennismoderator gets hardly any Google hits either, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.

My question is whether anyone has actually ever heard of such a person/position?
I obviously looked around, but I noticed that apart from a few Belgian/Dutch sources, and one Japanese, there seems to be no such thing, in English.
"Knowledge management", "knowledge manager", yes (see e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_management#Knowledge_... but "knowledge moderator"? No, not really. Furthermore, the description of a knowledge manager's job would seem to cover what my text calls a "kennismoderator".
