Context: motor vehicles.
What is the best way of translating this? It always appears in the plural, and I can't work out if it means just the vehicle logbook (and is that term peculiarly British?), or if it includes insurance certificates and other bits of paper. It seems silly to call them 'on-board documents' because obviously that's the last place they should be kept, for security reasons!

In the man can they would simply be called "car papers", since they include the registration, the insurance certificates, and the driver's license.
I have been stopped by a bobby in London, who simply said "May I see you papers, Sir?" It is possible that car papers would be equally used in the UK, although "automobile" or "auto" appears to be the term of preference for cars.

The Oxford Duden does list "car-owner", soi the term cannot be all that far off.

"Board documents" is most frequently used in connection with ships or airplanes, arely with cars, to my knowledge.

Yes, I like papers, although I think I might use 'vehicle' instead of 'car'. Our police like to use the phrase 'is this your vehicle sir?'!!
