nine-way intersection test
Explanation:
I have a feeling that your original is talking about this test of a person's spatial abilities and the ability to understand an abstract representation of a spatial reality. This test is usually administered to adults as part of a psychological battery of tests and not to children. It is a fairly advanced test which could be used in a military training context. It is a kind of map-reading exercise to see if the subject can correlate directions on a map when at an intersection where there are nine choices of directions which can be followed. I do not have time to look for Internet references to back up this answer but I think this is the gist of it.

As I said, it is not usually administered to children so I am not certain that this is it, but putting it forward as a possibility.

Just to make it clear it would not be these nine steps stated above, but possibly nine different areas that are assessed.

jumping nines

Explanation:

Reference information:
Might be the name of an exercise mentioned (but not explained) at http://dissertations.ub.rug.nl/FILES/faculties/ppsw/2007/r.m... It appears to be an exercise in spatial information processing. A rough translation would be Nine-way intersection, but there's no need to translate if you provide the short description, I believe.
