Dutch to English translations [PRO] Medical - Psychology / intelligence tests
Explanation: Not really sure, but what is meant here is that thinking 'overstijgt' (goes beyond) what the word says. Abstract thinking is a term for generalisation and is used also in psychology.
Overstijgend denken seems to me not identical, but descriptive/specifying for abstract thinking and is not a commonly used formulation. Thanks to everybody who contributed to the discussion! 3 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Abstract is the best content-wise only abstract had been mentioned and needs to be paraphrased, that is what the text asks for. Nothing beyond that.
with meditation, though. It just means that the person it is about can think past what it really says in the text. The many hits on google suggest it is a term used also in job adverts to mean some way of not thinking outside the box but just being able to abstract. It is not because there are two terms for this in Dutch (although I find overstijgend a little weird) that there are two in English. Lateral thinking is a way of problem solving, not a way of thinking in itself.
Thanks! I'll keep this question open for another 12 hours, because after trying to confirm the answers, I'm not sure yet. Given it is what's between the brackets, as Kirsten suggests, abstract thinking is the safest choice it appears. I tend to opt for a more literal translation, such as "transcended/transcending thinking" that are associated with meditation, but psychologists are using meditation terminology more often nowadays. Any opinions?
Explanation: This is the most usual term (more than 400.000 hits om UK Google), although this is used most frequently in a business context. It is possible that there is a special term used in psychology.
