Wat is mentaliseren?
Mentaliseren is iets, wat iedereen doet en wat iedereen in meerdere of mindere mate kan.
Het betekent dat je beseft dat gedrag (externe toestanden), voortkomt uit gevoelens en gedachten (interne toestanden). Mentaliseren betekent dus dat je stil staat bij je eigen gevoelens en gedachten, maar ook stilstaat en nadenkt over de gevoelens en gedachten van de ander. Vaak worden deze gevoelens en gedachten niet hardop uitgesproken, maar vullen we deze in. We denken dan te weten wat de ander voelt of denkt. Mentaliseren is beseffen dat deze invullingen vaak verkeerd zijn.
Hoe we een situatie ervaren verschilt per persoon, wat de een prettig vindt kan voor de ander onprettig zijn. Mentaliseren is met een onderzoekende houding nadenken over deze verschillen en wat deze betekenen voor het contact dat we met de ander hebben.
