Dutch to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Religion | | Dutch term or phrase: traject Godsgeleerdheid | overzicht onderdelen theologie, traject Godsgeleerdheid
theologie & godsgeleerdheid m.i. beide theology, of niet? |
| | | English translation:Divinity / Theological Studies | Explanation: Godgeleerdheid is more the study if religious *doctrine* of one (or more) god(s).
If you want to avoid pleonasm without using "theology" twice over, try...
1) "Divinity" (if focused on Christian study) or
2) "Theism" (if talking about studies concerning *a* god) or
3) "Theological Studies" since "traject" is indicative of the major or concentration (i.e. the academic study of ... )
Be careful here not to confuse with "religion" (i.e. godsdienst if monotheistic) or "theology", which are both solely focused on one and only one god. Religion doesn't necessarily have to do with any god at all - only belief systems - whereas theology branches from christianity, etymologically speaking. |

Explanation: I think you're right, eg: "Leuven. Faculty of Theology./ Faculteit Godsgeleerdheid Katholieke Universiteit" (from search result, see URL below).

While one would expect, perhaps, 'theologie' to include 'god(s)geleerdheid' (as implied in your context), I also don't think there is a strict rule in common usage as to which is a subset of the other. In this regard they seem interchangeable.
(See http://www.godsgeleerdheid.vu.nl/de_faculteit/index.cfm) "Het profiel van de Faculteit der Godgeleerdheid [heading]...Het onderwijsprogramma in zowel de bachelor- als de masterfase bestaat uit een opleiding (christelijke) theologie, een opleiding religie en levensbeschouwing, en (in de nabije toekomst) een afzonderlijke opleiding Islamitische theologie."
