Here's a nice explanation of what's happening.

"Dredging of the lagoon and Commodore Channel creates extra sediment accommodation space, leading to a potential for sediment deposition. The system therefore gets a so-called sand demand (or in Dutch: ‘zandhonger’) and starts acting as a sediment sink."

"On the south coast the island Schouwen duiveland is bordered by the estuary “Oosterschelde” The intertidal area of the Oosterschelde, which is a national park in the Netherlands and a Natura 2000 site of European importance, is subject to structural erosion. The hydromorphology of the Oosterschelde is out of balance due to the construction of the storm surge barrier and auxiliary dams of the Delta Project. This structural erosion is known as the “sand demand” of the Oosterschelde. The sand demand has a direct effect on the natural values of this natura2000 areas and a longer term effect on flood defense." |

you can try to find a just as colourful term, but you could also use a term that describes what is actually taking place.
And this is, see below, ... dat de slikken en platen *eroderen*.
The 'platen' are being eroded away - or being eaten away at - therefore this 'hunger' - because of the changes induced by the Oosterscheldekering
Grondsuppletie Galgenplaat
