You would take measurements for a suit, or of say a room when ordering carpet, or in do-it-yourself work. However in technical documents and especially those of a scientific nature i.e. referring to data the word \"measurements\" is avoided when possible.

measurement / readings


Explanation:
I pretty much agree with David's answer above. However, I think measurement is probably OK in technical documents where it refers to the act of measuring as opposed to the actual readings taken or values obtained.

E.g. "... recent field measurements have shown that the subsurface resistivity may still be obtained under the right conditions", as opposed to "Readings are in thousandths of an inch."
