Langs de hoofdstraten verdringen de winkeltjes van de handelaars in juwelen of stoffen elkaar. Meestal zijn het een soort **pijpenla’s**, open aan de voorzijde. De waren staan hoog opgetast langs de wanden en de vloer is bedekt met een ‘luie’, schone matras. Voor de winkeltjes spreiden straatventers hun waren uit en mobiele restaurantjes voorzien de voorbijgangers van voedsel.

Explanation:
"Pijpenla" means any long narrow interior, reminiscent of the long narrow drawers in which Dutch men used to keep their long clay pipes. Hence also the expression "het regent pijpenstelen". It is used in particular to describe pubs, shops and rooms. "Hole in the wall (shop)" would seem closest to the sense conveyed by the original.

Btw, the plural would be "pijpenladen" or "pijpenlaatjes".
