A consensus opinion is that the criteria may well be 3 dimensional (x,y,z-axes) and the interface referred to thus complies with, is aligned with, matches, meets, follows these - vis-a-vis maybe a camera system? that the driver is linked into.
The only other oe that I personally thought about in the middle of last night - yes, I know, WEIRD! was "switches between" however, the first suggestion seems more logical.
Besides the meanings given by Van Dale (roughly: to contribute or intercede), I think this discussion (and an off-line contribution I was very happy to receive) shows that there are probably two other basic meanings of 'komt tussen', viz. 'to occur' (in the sense of 'komt voor') and 'to act or operate' (one mening of the French 'intervenir'). This is assuming, of course, that the author of my source document can be taken seriously (which I think he can)! In the context of my source document, I opted for 'relevant', which I would say is more or less in line with 'komt voor' ('to occur') but wider in meaning. Thank you all for your help. I must apologise for apparently putting some of you on the wrong track by using the letters X, Y and Z. These letters are indeed readily associated with three-dimensional coordinates, but in this case I used them as a kind of "generic" abstraction. X, Y and Z merely stand for certain criteria listed in a table in the document, e.g. 'de rijrichtselectie (...)', 'de uitschakeling van de functionaliteiten TBL1+ bij een achteruit-rangeerrit', 'de ritzin'.
French is one of my main languages. Intervenir can also simply mean to perform work (on), carry out/perform an assignment etc etc. It's clearly a Dutch-language 'belgicisme'.
I 'm with you completely in your analysis, but still can't figure it out. Here are a few examples:
1. Komt tussen in de criteria a) de rijrichtingselectie; b) de uitschakeling van de functionaliteiten bij een achteruit-rangeerrit.
2. Komt tussen in alle functionaliteiten die tot een noodremming kunnen leiden.

This is a good one Jack! Without knowing what the criteria are, there are indeed options which seem logical - the question is "which one ifts?" If it means that intervenes between the criteria, then there should be a logical extrapolation to the consequences of the intervention. If "contributes"to the criteria, again there should be a logical extrapolation as to how this occurs. Finally, could it just be poorly written original language (often the case with engineers etc) and then just mean it comes in between the criteria, i.e. not an intervention but just "inbetween."
