dans le sud de la France = la Côte d'Azur
à l'est de la France = l'Allemagne
dans l'est de la France = L'Alsace
Par contre au nord ou au sud, s'il n'a y a pas de précision. Par exemple : Au nord c'était les coron (célèbre chanson de feu Pierre Bachelet)

De nos jours, on entend beaucoup dans les médias "au nord" ou "au sud" à la place de "dans le nord" ou "dans le sud", mais c'est une faute grossière. Par exemple (sur France Inter) : "Le jazz est né au sud des Etats-Unis" (donc au Mexique, voire au Nicaragua, peut-être même pas au Paraguay ou en Patagonie).
