De botter is een scheepstype dat vroeger gebruikt werd voor de visserij op de Zuiderzee. Het scheepstype ontstond geleidelijk aan, steeds vonden aanpassingen plaats. De geringe diepte van de Zuiderzee leidde tot de ontwikkeling van rond- en platbodems. De botter is een platbodem ; er is geen kiel, de zijzwaarden zorgen ervoor dat deze schepen niet "verlijeren", zijwaarts afdrijven.
