Chauve-souris (mammifère chiroptère), le grand rhinolophe fer à cheval (Rhinolophus ferrum-equinum) est de taille considérable par rapport aux autres microchiroptères; son envergure peut atteindre 37 cm. Le corps est robuste, la tête relativement grosse, avec deux grandes oreilles. Le museau a la forme caractéristique d'un fer à cheval, au milieu duquel s'ouvrent les narines, et est surmonté par un appendice foliacé en forme de lance. Le corps est revêtu d'un pelage doux et long, de couleur brune sur le dos et gris-fauve sur la face ventrale; la surface alaire est plus sombre que le pelage.
