The full phrase is "the small of his back" Explanation: The small of "someone's" back is that part of the back that is just below the middle and that is usually at the narrowest section of the back. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2003-01-10 03:32:43 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- To me, the sentence about truth, lies, and withdrawal does not point to hidden meanings. Of course, one cannot tell for sure without knowing the full story, but it seems that the woman is afraid of some reality, which she has covered by lying, which in tun complicates things, because she ends up fearing both the reality as well as the consequences of her lies. As to withdrawal, she may have meant withdrawal symptoms. Does she suffer from any dependencies or co-dependency tendencies? The word \"withdrawal\" as used here and the sentence as a wholehere do not lead me to any subliminal meanings, unless the other parts of the story support such a notion. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2003-01-10 04:45:54 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I believe Rita Heller is quite correct. The woman in the story is holding the man with her hand placed behind his back so as to keep him in, so he would not withdraw. The withdrawal here is the post-coital kind. I should have read the question more carefully. Thanks, Rita. American Heritage Dictionary |
