English term or phrase: range-bound
Investor sentiment appears less negative than it has been in the past and there is a clear consensus among equity market commentators, particularly the UK financial press, that the market will become “range-bound” in 2003, trading within a band close to its current levels.

trapped within a specific trading range
Explanation:
"Redmayne-Bentley have dealt in traded options since they were introduced, but we have noticed more interest lately. This is probably because of the behavior of the market over the last eighteen months. For much of that time it has been 'range bound': trapped within a trading range from which it cannot break out. There are ways that money can be made from a sideways tracking, range-bound market using options - just as they can be used for making money from rising, as well as falling shares and indices. Options can be used in a very safe way, and in a way which supplements investors' return on money invested - an important consideration in markets where it is difficult to make the kind of profits we were used to just over a year ago."
