In conjunction with electronic trading platforms and integrated clearing systems, order routing permits "straight-through processing", i.e. order execution and subsequent trade clearing/settlement without manual intervention.

Order routing networks can be proprietary platforms operated by single financial services providers (examples are Deutsche Bank's "Autobahn" system, or the original Citibank "Cats OS" warrant trading platform), or they can be independent, linking several brokers: Reuters' Bridge subsidiary or GLtrade are examples for this type of system.
