"Long term stability for refractory elements such as nickel can be adversely affected by tube behaviour, i.e. by nickel uptake. Therefore it is advantageous to recalibrate periodically, e.g. every 10 samples."

Can someone explain the process/problem behind this sentence ? I don't really know much about graphite furnace AAS :)

In the long term, the refractory components of the measuring device can get contaminated with the components being measured. e.g. Nickel will migrate into the refractory component. Because of this, they need to be frequently recalibrated.

Sorry, my 1st explanation was a bit wide of the mark...
Refractory elements are elements that evaporate at high temperatures.

presumably these can be absorbed by the walls of the graphite furnace and alter the calibration.
