It is in a library counter. Can any one explain in simple words what 'hold' means in this context.

For whatever reason, an item you have requested be reserved for you is not available. Perhaps someone with more priority has it; or perhaps it is being borrowed from elsewhere and still has not arrived. The reason is not given in the short example we have.
