laser sensors (fiber optic interlock switches)

chapter title: Non-Mechanical Limiting & Dynamic Limiting

"In a robotic application, Base Limit switches or other Axis-Limit switches can be replaced by a convergent photoelectric beam, if the base cam is high enough above the pedestal to not generate a false ON signal.

This is in the middle of a catalogue describing switch models, and I find it difficult to follow what it says: I understand that in these applications base/axis (?) limit switches can be replaced by these fiber optic switches provided the base cam (?) is at a minimum height with respect to its pedestal - questions: base of what? axis of what? base cam of what??? the document I am translating does not refer to these component anywhere else? Can you understand what kind of application they are talking about?

Thanks!

Selected answer:these are robot-related terms
Explanation:
base, axis, and cam are robot-related terms here.

Base -- the platform which supports the manipulator arm.
Axis -- an individual component free to move relative to the other components.
Cam -- a rotating part which, due to its eccentric center line, causes an in-and-out motion in any part pushing against it.

The motion of the non-servo robot is started by the controller and is stopped by a LIMIT SWITCH hitting a mechanical stop. The LIMIT SWITCH sends an electrical signal to the controller which starts the next motion. Light sensing, lazer and fiber optical limit switches are also used to change motions.

The Balluff Robot Base Limit System is designed to limit the working area of a robot being used in the presence os a human operator.
The switch-actuating Circular Cams are used to define the Working and Supplementary Areas of the robot.
