Law/Patents - Law: Contract(s)
English term or phrase: in answer to the formal question I have given my consent
I'm translating a historical "deed of adoption". I came upon these two sentences:

"on being formally questioned by each other we have given our consent"

"in answer to the formal question I have given my consent"

This last sentence seems to be a famous in deeds and contracts.

What is meant by "formal question". ?

English translation:answering the question asked officially I have given my consent
Explanation:
I think a "formal question" is a question asked by an official and an answer to such a question has legal consequences. For example, if two people answer "Yes" to the priest's (a kind of official:) question, they will become "man and wife".

agree  Ken Cox: The wording may arise from a legal requirement to request the vocal consent of the party (perhaps arising from a time when many people were illiterate).
