English term or phrase: waist
"The radiographic hallmark of the disorder is Osteolysis, which occurs predominantly in the terminal phalanges of the hands. Bandlike radiolucent areas across the ***waist*** of one or more terminal phalanges may occur along with tuftal resorption."

Waist: in this context I considered the term as a synonym of diaphysis. Is this correct or would it be better to specify (middle diaphysis)?

middle diaphysis
Explanation:
I agree that it's a synonym but in this case i would be as specific as possible.

agree  Drunya: On the second thought, I guess some people might call the middle part of diaphysis "middle diaphysis". If they do, so be it. It must be the thinnest part of a phalange too.
