English term or phrase: hostile track
A cruiser is engaging a few gunboats: "Opening fire with guns, assumed hostile track four four five six."

My question pertains to the coordinates. What's up with this kind of figures exactly? Why is it that there are four numbers here? Can anyone explain? Bearing/course coordinates contain three digits. I get those - points on the compass, right? What's the diference with a "hostile track"?

Thanks.

Explanation:
In this case, track numbers do not include coordinates of a moving ship/aircraft. There are separate values for determining them, namely, range, bearing, location, all three-digit.
My guess: a number assigned on the basis of the IFF - Identification Friend or Foe number (though not identical to it), used to distinguish between different radar signals in combat situations. In the example quoted below (see fig. 4) , it's randomly generated.

Four alphanumeric character track number

Explanation:
1.) Each track shall be assigned a track number consisting of four alphanumeric characters.

(a.) If manually entering interceptor track data, two alphabetic characters, indicating a squadron, shall be entered followed by two numerals (01-31) for live or (32-63) for SIM. (Note: these numbers (i.e., 01-31 for live and 32-63 for SIM) are no longer valid since the Regions started to produce ATOs. The ATO are produced for both Live and Exercises and reflect a combination of all the two digit numbers).

(b.) Non-interceptor track numbers shall be encoded as one alphabetic character, representing the originating region, followed by three numeric characters.
