English term or phrase: captain in the corner

This is the context, from a poem:
".. the old man,
Old Captain-in-the-Corner, drank his rum
With friendly gestures to four chairs"
Does anyone know of any idiomatic meaning of Captain in the Corner, or is it just what it seems to be?

Explanation:
It is not a phrase that I have ever come across, or that I can see evidence for elsewhere. It would suggest to me that perhaps this old captain is one who sits in the same corner drinking his rum on a regular basis (i.e. every night) - he is a permanent fixture.
