keeps the donations coming in Explanation: Missionary societies at the time of this text relied almost entirely on donations for financial support. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 32 mins (2005-07-25 10:36:43 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- For background: in my parent\'s church (which I attended when I was young), donations were collected during each service by passing around special plates made for this purpose. The amount so obtained was (and probably still is) called \'the collection\', the donations were called \'offerings\', and the plates were called \'collection plates\'. |
