Slang / hip-hop/street dancing
English term or phrase: fish (slang)
I am looking for a slang meaning here, not along the normal lines of "sea creature"!

In a discussion about a scene from a hip-hop street dancing movie ("You Got Served"), someone says: "They cut out the fish, though".

Then the discussion goes on that the original scene was a lot longer. I've found several possible slang interpretations for "fish", but does anyone know if there is a specific connotation within the hip-hop/street dancing subculture?

Otherwise I may simply use a translation for "they cut out a lot".

Thanks in advance!

English translation:A specific dance move or "step" in breakdancing or dance in general
Explanation:
Also known as "the worm," "the dolphin,"

I think they probably meant a move similar to "the worm."

HOWEVER, EVEN IF THEY DIDN'T mean that specific move, I would strongly bet that "the fish" is SOME dance move. After all, each dance team invents its own names for its moves.

Read through the following brief quotes and excerpts and see what you think...

By the way, I am a fairly avid dancer here in Los Angeles, California. I do visit nightclubs and the like. I mainly dance salsa and ballet, but I have had experience in hip-hop, as well.

Therefore, the sentence \"they cut out the fish, though\" is a complaint or criticism saying \"but they removed the part where the dancers do the fish move!\"

An answer well worth waiting for - it fits this particular context perfectly. I actually found an additional comment later in my text about a routine that was cut, which helps to support your view. Very helpful. Thank you!

They cut out the finish, though.

Explanation:
The person could have said "finish", swallowing a syllable, as is often done in street slang. "Though" would also more than likely be pronounced as "dough".

a version

Explanation:
It seems that there hardly is a special hip hop slang meaning for "fish", otherwise it would appear in at least 1 of the 6 hip-hop slang collections I have checked.

I believe it's highly possible that "fish" here means "the main part", "the most juicy part", or such, as in "the main part of the meal".

agree  Mikhail Kropotov: i searched for a good hour, too, and all in vain! well, not quite for nothing. "fish" appears in a lot of rap songs' lyrics, but it doesn't have the same meaning. just the many usual meanings, none specific to hip-hop

one idea

Explanation:
The idea I get when reading it and knowing that after that they went on talking that the scene used to be longer is that "they chopped the scene", they cut it, probably the end or just some bits.
Don't know which language are you translating into, to try to find an equivalent, but I understand it as a comparison between the scene and the fish, something like "they cut out the fish('s head and now it's incomplete)

I might be just rambling ;o)

Grace.

J-Fish crew (break-dance group)

Explanation:
Eagles Nest Ranch took a huge step last year and decided to get funky by introducing its first Breakdance Camp! It was a huge success! Bboys and Bgirls from the ages of 9 - 18 learned SICK dance moves as well as some breakdance history and culture.
For 2004, ENR has again recruited top-notch instructors from the J-FISH Crew, a local group of breakers teaching lessons in Medicine Hat. These breakers know their stuff! Led by Kurtis "WOLFY" Albers this group loves to see kids and youth get involved in the hip hop

disagree  Alexander Demyanov: No such group took any part in making the film.++Not "obviously". The other way around. If they had taken part in making the film, they could be cut or left in. Since they hadn't, there was nothing to cut.

Alexander Demyanov: Seems hardly feasible that girls should be cut out of a hip hop performance. Why? Also, I don\'t see how a derogatory term for women is in order in the phrase.||| Saw it before making mine. Not convincing.

Apparently it wasn\'t, as the asker chose another suggestion, which I endorse, also - As I said - mine was a \'possible\' slang usage of \'fish\'.

kellyn\'s suggestion is much more in line with what the asker needed.

This is indeed a very common slang meaning of fish, esp. as SirReal indicated. But it does not fit my context as well as another answer. Still, thanks to all of you!
