"The ICMP Ping address should be an IP address that will be pinged continuously."

I am translating this text into Hungarian, where "ICMP Ping" is used without translation. But I have no idea about "ping" as a verb in this context.

ICMP ping
Explanation:
Ping is a short, contentless message which is sent to station at the given IP address. The station acknowledges the reception of this command, thus establishing that the station is on-line.

Ping is just one of a series of the Internet Control Message Protocol, short ICMP.

Sorry, I didn\'t really address the verb question - as for \'to ping\', I\'d paraphrase this, e.g. \'to send a ping command\'. That\'s how I handle this word in German.

-> Yep, the ping command really is a multi-purpose tool - it's also used in DoS attacks...

agree  jand: "to ping" in comp sci jargon means basically to check if someone or something is functioning or awake or able to respond. the ping command is the most common use, but not the only one; ref. the Jargon File (http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/)
