English term or phrase: Twice removed

He is my cousin, twice removed.

What is the correct translation of 'twice removed' in this instance (these people share the same great grandparents, but nor grandparents).

Explanation:
You can say it in two ways in English, namely "twice removed" or "by the second degree". The latter is common in Dutch, i.e. "tweede graad", although the former is also used in Afrikaans (probably as an informal translation), i.e. "twee keer verwyder". If I were you, I'd go for "tweede graad".

Keep in mind also that Afrikaans uses the same word for cousin and nephew/niece, which may lead to confusion. According to Pharos Één, a grandnephew/niece and a second cousin are both "kleinneef" in Afrikaans. This may lead some Afrikaans people to think that grandnephew/niece and second cousin are the same people.

Explanation:
I think the "twice removed" is better translated by "twee geslagte terug".
In the newest Woordelys en Spelreëls "kleinneef" is written as one word.

The degree (first, second, third cousin, etc.) indicates the minimum number of generations between either cousin and the nearest common ancestor; the remove (once removed, twice removed, etc.) indicates the number of generations, if any, separating the two cousins from each other. (wikipedia)

since it is a boy, klein-neef, if it was a girl, it would be klein-niggie, if they are three times removed, it would be agter klein-neef

Samuel Murray: Strongly disagree. "kleinneef" means second cousin (male). The second cousin is not necessarily twice removed. One can have a second cousin once removed also :-) and it's not the same as a first cousin twice removed. [EDITED to fix my error].

-> I strongly disagree with Samuel Murray. First cousins are called "neef" (boy) or "niggie" (girl). The first cousin is definitely not twice removed, since he / she would then be called neef/niggie. Second cousins can also definitely not be removed once!
