Explanation:
After the cost of a policy is worked out, the amount that is over for the benefit of the client is called excess (oorskot) in Afrikaans. Say for instance in a funeral policy the funeral costs R15 000 and the worth of the policy is R20 000 an excess of R5000 will be paid out to the policy holder.

I am talking specifically of funeral insurance here. See http://www.funeralwise.com/plan/costs/insurance.

In regular insurance it can be the insurance that applies to that portion of a loss or damage which exceeds a specific amount. (In which case 'bybetaling' would be correct). So without more context it is difficult to say which translation is to be used.

disagree  Eugene Seegers: Isn't an excess the amount payable by the client to the insurer under certain conditions, such as when the client is younger then 25, etc? I would rather use "bybetaling" in that case.

Explanation:
the correct term in english is insurance excess if i am not mistaken. The afrikaans version should be translated using the full term. this would translate as versekering bybetaling.
