English to Albanian translations [PRO] Marketing - Food & Dairy / Declaration
English term or phrase:lot number
Can someone please tell me what is the correct term for lot number as used on food product declarations in AL?
The translation that I have (Numri i grupit të mallit) does not sound right but I can not be sure.
That's exactly what I mean with "numri i mallit". There is a form that is used in Albanian custom that is called Lot Data/Information (Të dhënat e mallit) and in addition to others you will find Lot Number (Numri i mallit)as part of this fom.
I was actually hoping that someone might know the exact term used on goods produced and sold in Albania. The best reference would be a food labeling law but fact is - too many choices for someone who does not know a word Albanian. So, all I can do is discuss the term itself.
Lot number is not goods ID. For example, it may contain Factory code, production line number, shift number and time of production. It enables the process of traceability / should a problem occur with a specific piece of product we will know exactly what was going on in the process at the time, who worked on the line, which ingredients were put in it.
This might be a good definition:
LOT NUMBER A distinctive combination of numbers and/or letters which specifically identifies a batch.

Here are some of the translation of the word "lot" that I know :
parti (malli), mall, seri, group, ngastër, vend, parcelë, etc.
I checked "Fjalori i shqipes së sotme" for the word parti which means part or quantity of goods that are transported together and the expression in Albania will be : parti (malli). You can find the same translation in English-Albanian dictionary too.
I chose to use the word "mall"( which is another translation of the word lot that has entered our dictionaries and Albanian oral daily language and not "parti" because we are not talking about part or quantity of goods transported together, we are talking about goods - lot and exactly lot number. From this meaning we get the expressions : You are a good lot - malli i mirë qenke; bad lot - mall i keq.
This is my rationale.
Hi Klemi,
"Lot" is not "goods" it's a part/portion of goods. In official docs in internet you can find it as "Numri i partisë:". Please check Albanian dictionary "Fjalori i shqipes së sotme" what does the word "parti" mean in this context.
Too many choices and probably, they all are correct in different contexts. Based on the existing dictionaries (Pavli Qesku- Anglish-Shqip and Economic terms English- Abanian dictionary) lot is translated as "mall'. Lot Number ( numri i mallit) is not a batch, serial, group or party number. It is as you said exactly lot number (numri i mallit)
It will be placed on a product packaging box alongside with equivalents in other languages, including English and should mean exactly the same. I.e. not serial nor batch number etc. but exactly lot number.

Explanation: Hi Vesna some suggestions would be numri i partisë/i serisë/i grupit. In Albania itself numri i partisë seems to be used randomly.
...Markën, numrin e modelit, dhe datën e blerjes së produktit. Prodhuesit duhet të .... Detajet e identifikimit të produktit (emri, numri i partisë, numri i serisë, bar-kodi...
Other uses are numri i ngastrës, numri i lotit.

Hi Vesna, "Numri i partisë" would be the appropriate one. Sorry for the technical glitch. I was trying to give options. HTH

Asker: Thank you again and no problem.. I suppose you got the message (please see the discussion also :)
Explanation: It is the term used in Logistics books in Albanian and I think it is the best translation since a "lot number" is the number assigned to a particular quantity of product or material from a single manufacturer.

"Lot number" for a particular quantity of product is the ID of that product, as the ID it is to a person. That is why I think the words "numër identifikimi" should be part of the translation terms.

For your information I used to work for an American conglomerate, which was supporting US military contract, and trust me we used to order materials, especially spear parts applying Lot Number. Thus, lot number identifies a set of materials, not specifically 1 particular material, but rather a whole set of parts, components, or subassemblies. Therefore Lot Numbers means a number, which identifies a set of materials that is sold as a whole package. If it was a unique part, component or assembly then it would be used a term known as National Stock Number. In this case the person inquired about exact meaning of Lot Number. If anyone challenges this, feel free to contact me.
I can explain the term in Albanian and Serbian diligently, but I have rather chose English so all fellow translators can read and learn about this term, since it is not common term in English.
Example sentence(s):
Please provide me the exact lot number cited on federal acquisition regulation.

Asker: Na srpskom je to jednostavno lot broj. Možda bi i na AL mogao biti numri i lot?
Asker: I asked in SR because I see you are "Native Serbian" and my point was in SR equivalent of the term. As for definition of lot number - I explained in the Discussion.
In any case, thank you for your answer and explanations.
