Before I present the Arabic translation of “determination, I would like to present The American Heritage Dictionary’s definitions for the same word:

a. The act of making or arriving at a decision.
b. The decision reached.

a. Firmness of purpose; resolve
b. A fixed intention or resolution

a. The settling of a question or case by an authoritative decision or pronouncement,
b. The decision or pronouncement made.

a. The ascertaining or fixing of the quantity, quality, position, or character of something
b. The result of such ascertaining.

5. A fixed movement or tendency toward an object or end.

6. Logic.
a. The defining of a concept through its constituent elements.
b. The qualification of a concept or proposition to render it more definite or specific

My purpose of posting the entire dictionary entry is to demonstrate how difficult it is to determine which meaning you had in mind. Here at KudoZ, we ask that our askers include sufficient contextual matter, so that the translation we suggest would be directly relevant to your context.

In the absence of contextual material, I will have to guess what you may have meant. The alternative is to give you all the possible translations of all the possible meanings, which would be untenable in this forum.

My guess is that you meant definition 2a, given above. If my guess is incorrect, please let us know, and we will try again. For this particular meaning, several Arabic translation possibilities may be suggested. The fittest choice will depend on the actual sentence or other words surrounding “determination”. If the word is to be used alone, then it will need to be expressed with the definite article. Arabic abstract nouns are expressed that way, unless otherwise indicated by the sentence structure. For that purpose, the translation suggestions given below will all be written with the definite article, which in Arabic is not a separate word, but is part of the word, as in Romanian and some other languages. Here are my suggestions:

ثبات العزم
رسوخ العزم
مضاء العزيمة

If you are going to use the word as a motto or a slogan representing a theme or a company ethos, for instance, then I recommend suggestion 1 or 4 above. Suggestions 2, 3 and 5 work better within a sentence or within a larger context, such as a heading for a paragraph discussing the concept. Suggestion 6 is fine, except that the word also means “design,” so it might cause some ambiguity.

I hope that your computer can display Arabic text.

TaSmiim or 3zm - most likely تصميم أو عزم

Greetings / tahaiya tayyiba wa b3ad...

May I second with FuadMYahya's good discussion and suggest that the most likely intended term (absent clarifying context otherwise) is either

(1) tasmiim تصميم

(2) 3zm عزم

(transliterated above, in case your PC does not support Arabic script)

HTH. Khair, in sha' Allah.
