Explanation:
Normally the term is used as part of an expression such as:

إلى الأبد
ila al`abad

أبدا
abadan (abada if the last word in the sentence).

على التأبيد
'ala alta`beed

All are different flavors of "forever". Which one to use depends on your sentence.

The other word is سرمد sarmad. Its definition in lisan al'arab is the permanence of time, or the permanence of the day or night.

Here is an example from the Quran:

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمُ النَّهَارَ سَرْمَدًا
and say (to them) what if Allah makes the day eternal for you, who (other than Him) can bring you a night in which you would rest?
