Explanation:
هي قطع صغيرة توضع بين قوالب الآجر لحفظ المسافة فيما بينها حتى جفاف المادة اللاصقة لها من جبس أو اسمنت أو غيره. يمكن رؤيتها أيضا في الأبنية قيد الإنشاء المبنية أو المغطاة بالحجر القدسي، حيث تفصل بين كل حجر وما تحته أو فوقه حتى يثثبت في موقع ثم تزال.

تساعد هذه الأسافين على حفظ المسافة بين الأحجار مما يسمح بإبراز الشكل الهندسي أو الرص المميز لها.

بعد التفكير، قد تبدو الكلمة غريبة بعض الشيء، إلا أن المصطلح الشعبي "دق اسفينهم بينهم" قد يجعلها مألوفة بعض الشيء. فالمقصود هنا بأن شخصا ما قد أوقع العداوة بين اثنين فباعدهما ... للتوضيح لا أكثر :)

كلمة أخرى قد تتلاءم والمعنى هنا هي الوتد، إلا أن "الوتد" تعود على قطعة قد تماثل الاسفين في شكلها، إلا أن حجمها يظل أكبر واستخداماتها تختلف عن الاسفين في هذه الحالة للنص
