primary means the the drive ratio of the engine to the transmission, final drive refers to the drive ratio for the transmission to the rear wheel motorcycles ususally use a belt or a chain in the primary about 1-1/2 inches wide the ratio is the number of teeth on each gear (1-eng,1-trans) ie 88 on one and 42 on the other changing these numbers are not possible on most bikes and without sever consequences to the motor or the tranny (ie damage) on most bikes you can change the final drive ratio goin up on the trany number and down on the wheel gives you a higher top speed but cuts down on the takeoff power (torque) reverse it and you get the opposite effect see the sites below for more in depth
