Spandrel is a term used in evolutionary biology describing a phenotypic characteristic that is considered to have developed during evolution as a side-effect of a true adaptation, specifically arising from a correlation of growth, rather than arising from natural selection

According to Stephen Jay Gould a spandrel is a metaphor for characteristics that are or were originally side effects and not true adaptations to the environment.

or since Gould introduced the term to biology borrowing it for architecture as it is shown in this link :

considering spandrel as an anlogy it would be interesting to see its arabic equivalent in architecture which according to the dictionary of Ahmad Shafiq Al Khateeb is طبان the translator could explain the link between the two in a note (after the permission of the author, if possible)
