(A new commercially available test for diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be subdivided into ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, both of which present with symptoms of diarrhea and abdominal pain. The definitive diagnosis can usually be established by a combination of radiographic, endoscopic and histologic criteria, although in 10% to 15% of patients the distinction between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease cannot be made with certainty.
Two serological markers, perinuclear anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody (pANCA) and anti-saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody (ASCA) have been proposed as tools to assist in diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease, in differentiating ulcerative colitis (UC) from Crohn’s disease (CD) in patients with indeterminate colitis, and in determining therapy and monitoring response to treatment.
