Descreening allows you to scan photos or images from newspapers or magazines without risking a "moiré" pattern when you print them out. Offset printed photos (newspapers, magazines, etc.) are composed of small dots. When they are rendered as pixels and then printed again as dots, they often take on a strange "weave-like" pattern, known as moiré (pronounced "mo-ray"). Descreening blends the dots in the image when they are scanned so that they appear to have "continuous tones" and look good when viewed and printed.
