Economics
English term or phrase: immiserize
Hwew is some context; although I can get the gist of the meaning, I would like to know if anyone has seen a straightforward translation. I can't find the word in any of the big boys of dictionaries: Webster's, Encarta, American Heritage, Sakhr, Al-Mawrid et al:
"A quick end to the program of petroleum subsidies will immiserize the poor because the government’s cash-transfer program does not target or reach the poor well".

يزيد الفقير فقرا
Explanation:
this word obviously derives from the word misery, which means poverty, and the prefix in modified like in impoverish, the meaning is to reduce to misery.

I still feel more inclined toward the economic meaning of immiserate, as opposed to its social meaning see sense 2 of immiserate which is an equivalent to immiserize

see the use here, they are talking about immiserizing an economy:
"This paper presents the circumstances under which foreign aid can im
miserize a small, tariff-distorted economy, highlighting the role played..."

I think this goes along with the understanding I got as well, although I would not hesitate at using the social connotation, since economics is a social "science" as well and there is no harm in providing social manifestations of economic conditions. Thanks, especially as you did research your answer well.
